Ohgi: A Symbolic Fusion of East and West in Jewelry Design

Mimaya Dale's Award-Winning Ring Inspired by Japanese Folding Fans

In the realm of jewelry design, Mimaya Dale has created a unique piece that transcends cultural boundaries. Her creation, the Ohgi ring, is a testament to the fusion of Eastern symbolism and Western aesthetics, embodying a story of prosperity and elegance.

Derived from Dale's fascination with Japanese folding fans, the Ohgi ring is an 18K yellow gold piece adorned with a round sapphire. The design draws its inspiration from the Japanese folding fan, known as Ohgi, a symbol of prosperity in Japanese culture. The fan's significance lies in its ability to spread out when opened, a gesture believed to welcome good spirits.

What sets the Ohgi ring apart from conventional jewelry is its symbolic undertones and unique visual appeal. The ring can be worn in two directions, each offering a distinct look. This versatility, coupled with its symbolic significance, makes the Ohgi ring a standout piece in any jewelry collection.

The creation process of the Ohgi ring involved a blend of modern technology and traditional craftsmanship. Dale utilized 3D jewelry software to design the ring, which was then printed using a 3D printer. The piece was cast in 18K yellow gold, with a textured mat finish on the folding fan and a mirror polish on the rest of the ring. The final touch was the setting of a round sapphire, adding a touch of luxury to the piece.

The design project, which started in June 2019 in Vancouver, was completed in December of the same year. The process involved extensive research into the history and meanings behind Japanese folding fans, consultations with a kimono stylist, and numerous trials to achieve the perfect balance and wearability of the ring. Dale's efforts paid off when the Ohgi ring was awarded the Golden A' Jewelry, Eyewear, and Watch Design Award in 2020.

Dale's Ohgi ring is more than just a piece of jewelry; it's a narrative of cultural fusion, a symbol of prosperity, and a testament to the designer's creativity and dedication. With its unique design and meaningful symbolism, the Ohgi ring is a shining example of how jewelry can transcend its decorative function to become a wearable piece of art.
